CUSTOM MINTING

CUSTOM MINTING

Custom Minted Coins and Medallions capture the essence of life, events and timeless memories. Very few products have the lasting quality of precious metal. A finely crafted medallion is one of the best ways to guarantee your passion will be noticed, carried and treasured for a lifetime.
Special Requests Are Our Speciality
Special requests are not a problem at North American Mint. We even developed a high quality precious metal baseball card. We were selected to attempt this difficult project because of our renowned technical expertise. We Succeeded.

Want to see your unique design come to life on a copper, silver or gold coin or medallion? North American Mint brings the world’s finest artists, sculptors & die engravers together, resulting in stunning, high-relief coins and custom finishes. From initial design concept to final product, our experts are available each step of the process to ensure the highest quality product, delivered quickly and on budget.

Take a moment to review the basic steps and costs associated with your new project:

Art – Some designs work better on coins and medallions than others. Round or square designs, instead of rectangular designs, tend to make better use of coin space. Though we can certainly mint unusual sizes and shapes, these products take more time to custom craft and cost more than our standard issue medallions.
Our fastest turn-around is on one ounce 39mm silver and copper rounds. Our job is to provide useful feedback so that you get the most from your investment. Don’t have the facilities to create high-resolution vector art? No problem! Send us a scanned sketch or a blurb describing your idea and we’ll bring it to life!

Sculpts and/or Dies – You’ll need two in order to make your custom medallion. In coin language, “heads” is referred to as obverse, and “tails” is called reverse. The challenge with dies is that the relief (3 dimensional texture), complexity, and method of production can vary greatly and have a serious impact on the cost of each die.
Approximate Die Costs – an average 2d die costs $695 per die. A 3d hand sculpted die costs an average of $750-$1250 per die. A 3d plaster portrait die costs an average of $1750 - $1950 per die. Remember: 2 dies are required to produce a coin!

Material – Now that you have a basic understanding of art and dies, it’s time to move on to materials. Our coins are primarily minted from .999 fine silver, .999 fine copper and .9999 fine gold. Other metals are available and can be quoted upon request.

Time – A reasonable time frame for your coin project would be 4-6 weeks from start to finish. The variable on the project is certainly in the design phase, as perfecting art can often take a lot of time. Once your approved art or sculpt is in the engraver’s hands, it's about 3 weeks from the first strike!

Strike – With a polished set of dies in hand, we are ready to mint. The only question left is this: do you want Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) or Proof State (PS). What’s the difference? PS medallions feature a shiny, mirror-like finish, are more expensive and generally are considered “collector’s quality”. BU medallions are untouched and considered to be in “mint condition”, but typically feature a frosted, matte finish that resists scratches and fingerprints. BU is less expensive and great for high-volume projects not geared for the numismatic market.

Packaging – Tubes, air-tites, bags, individually numbered…we can get really creative and exotic with the medallions once they’re minted. Keep in mind that customization may be costly and time consuming, but just about anything can be done. Talk with a professional to explore your custom coin request.

Sculpted gold or silver stamping is achieved with a die that has more than one level or which is carved with the design and specifications required by the customer.
This type of multi-level gold or silver stamping results in a design that is raised from its surface. The various elements of the design are brought out beautifully and distinctly. The sculpted dies are usually carved by hand. This type of foil stamping gives excellent finished results.
